In cinch-back strides and a pinchback coat
patrician stock about the throat
then crash bang wallop that’s all she wrote
lending more than a melancholy air
to the first rail journey anywhere
William Huskisson sadly died
when he and Stephenson’s Rocket did collide
he got his ticket but he never got to ride
tragic yes but c’est la guerre
it was the first rail journey anywhere
the first rail journey anywhere
velocity – that unholy see
the pursuit of which by popular decree
could set all manner of sickness free
such speed should never be
the safety precautions were laissez-faire
on this first rail journey anywhere
oh oh yeah yeah yeah
the first rail journey anywhere
I ain’t saying I don’t care
but thank God such deaths are rare
mistakes were made let’s leave it there
it was the first rail journey anywhere
the first rail journey anywhere
oh oh yeah yeah yeah
the first rail journey anywhere
