John Marston talks about the Rec

John Marston recalls the Rec - the Recreation Centre - in Earle Road, a place where he and other children would go to play after school. You would pay one penny as an entrance fee, and there were all sorts of activities on offer, including dancing, chess and films. John also remembers that once he cut his knee there on the glass from a previously broken skylight, and he had to go to hospital - no health and safety in those days! He also mentions the now largely defunct 11-plus system
