This extract from the Railway History Map of Britain shows railway signals through the ages. Particularly noteworthy is the semaphore signal (No. 4 in the left-hand diagram): this kind of signal caused the collision at Abbots Ripton in 1876, because the arm was frozen inside the post, which could be mistaken for the signal indicating “line clear”
