Resource Type: Image | Posted on 14th May 2014 by Jenny Porter

This photo was sent to Russell Davies in 1949, possibly from a member of his family, the letter is signed from Ma, John and Bert. From the letterhead we can see that B.Heckley was the band secretary (http://www.edgehillstation.co.uk/resources/chislet-colliery-welfare-band-1/). The photo is of the Chislet Colliery Welfare Band in front of The Black Horse pub, Canterbury.

Chislet Colliery Band. The letter IS from Bert Heckley and his son John. Both known to me. The band photo is at the Black Horse in Hersden, Kent Nr Canterbury, now a Chinese restaurant. The Chislet Band was made up mostly of Heckleys and Hodgsons. I joined in 1951 at twelve years old. Alan Hodgson.
